Elizabeth Walker Kilmarx, 54, of Lyme, N.H., passed away at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in the presence of family and friends on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018, as a consequence of heart and lung damage from radiation treatment for childhood Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

She was born July 30, 1964, at the Boston Lying-In Hospital to Mary (Neidlinger) and Robert Kilmarx. She graduated from Barrington High School in Rhode Island. She attended a post-graduate year at the Ecole d’Humanité in the Swiss Alps, then graduated from Williams College where she majored in English. Elizabeth served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Dominica and earned a master’s degree from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at the State University of New York. She lived and work in Thailand, then in Laos with the United Nations Development Program. She settled in Lyme Center, N.H., working as a consultant in GIS mapping and forestry.

Elizabeth was very active in community organizations including the Prouty benefit for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center, the Lyme Democratic Party, and the Lyme Historians, for which she served as the Secretary.

She was a devoted daughter, sister, and aunt. She maple sugared, raised chickens, cooked delicious meals for groups large and small, and generously shared her blackberries and rhubarb. She skied the length of the Long Trail in Vermont, climbed every peak over 4,000 feet in New Hampshire, skated the Connecticut River, and sailed the coast of New England. Elizabeth loved her friends, her community, her dogs, and the land, and took dim views of hypocrisy, injustice, and the incorrect use of apostrophes.

Elizabeth is survived by her father, Robert; her brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Beth Kilmarx and Peter and Nichaphat Kilmarx; and her nephews Nicholas, Harris, Benjamin, Sumner, and Hunter. She was predeceased by her mother, Mary.

A memorial service will be held for Elizabeth W. Kilmarx at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Lyme Congregational Church on the Green at 1 Dorchester Road, Lyme, NH 03768.

Donations in Elizabeth’s memory may be given to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center, the Lyme Historians, and the Upper Valley Land Trust-Mary Kilmarx Fund.
