Editorial: Recycling reminder

As Barrington officials begin to consider new ways to improve our recycling effort, it's important we don't forget one key element to a successful program: Make sure everything in the recycling bin can be recycled.

While most folks are pretty careful about the items they toss in the green and blue bins, some are not.

In the past, workers at the Materials Recycling Facility in Johnston have pulled some nasty items out of the recycling hauls. Used diapers, hypodermic needles and propane tanks have been popping up at the facility, as well as plastic bags, food waste and yard waste.

It's gotten so bad that officials made a video warning folks to recycle properly — it shows workers yanking an old garden hose out of a jammed up recycling sorting machine.

"Keeping harmful items out of the recycling is important too, for the sake of every man and woman who works at the MRF (Materials Recycling Facility)," stated a release from RIRRC.

So before we toss something in the bin, let's make sure we check the label.
