Dr. H. Ivan Duran, of Barrington

Dr. H. Ivan Duran, of Barrington, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, peacefully and surrounded by his family. Son of Melchor and Clementina Duran, he was born in Huayapampa, Peru. He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Carmela Duran. He is predeceased by his brothers Saturnino, Florencio, Vladimir, Rogelio, and Gregorio Duran of Peru. He is survived by his sisters Celinda Castillo and Gudelia Marcelo and brother Romildo Duran of Peru.

From the Andean Highlands of Peru, Ivan made his way with strong sibling support to higher education in Lima. He graduated from San Marcos Medical School and then came to the Cleveland, Ohio in the U.S. He wed his Peru sweetheart Carmela shortly after. He spent great early years in Massachusetts and New Jersey, starting a family and making lifelong friendships. Eventually he made his home of over 30 years in Barrington. The doc was a pathologist at St. Anne’s Hospital of Fall River having made many friends among his colleagues and serving as chief for a period.

When not working, his favorites included seafood and sports. All New England teams and plenty of soccer/futbol. He could be seen in his stronger days running/walking on the East Bay Bike Path, reading a National Geographic or history book, grabbing Dunkins and at grandkids' sporting events. He was a devout Catholic and member of St. Luke’s Parish.

He leaves behind son, Dr. Carlos Duran and wife Jennifer of Hanover, Mass.; Patricia LeFevre and husband Christopher of Falmouth, Maine; daughter Claudia Maiorana and husband Christopher of Barrington; grandchildren Joshua, Marissa and Andrew LeFevre, William and James Duran, Jack and Marshall Maiorana; and over 50 nieces and nephews in California and Peru.

Calling hours will be held at Sunday, Oct. 29, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Ave, Riverside, RI  02915.

A remembrance Mass will be held Monday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. at St Luke’s, 108 Washington Road, Barrington RI followed by his burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
