Police later charge Seekonk man with assault

Barrington police officers were locked in a tense standoff with a Seekonk man on Sunday night, Aug. 5.

Police received a 911 call at about 9:40 p.m. from a woman who said her boyfriend had just assaulted her mother. The caller said her boyfriend had pushed her mother into a chainsaw — it was not running — and the woman had been injured.

Police quickly responded to the Sowams Road residence where the incident was taking place, and when they arrived they saw the suspect running away from them. The woman who had called 911 yelled out to officers that her boyfriend was going to get a weapon.

Police drew their guns and confronted the man, identified as 49-year-old Seekonk resident David Morris Travers. Police said Mr. Travers had picked up a crossbow, and then stood with his back to them.

Police yelled at Mr. Travers to drop his weapon, but the Seekonk man allegedly ignored the officers' orders.

After repeatedly telling Mr. Travers to drop his weapon, the Seekonk man eventually obliged. Police then arrested Mr. Travers and charged him with domestic-simple assault/battery.

Barrington police officers later contacted Seekonk police, who went to Mr. Travers's residence and seized 28 firearms.
