Common Fence Music cancels tonight’s Hope & Main show

Poor ticket sales cited for scrapping Honeysuckle/Four Bridges

WARREN — Citing poor ticket sales, Common Fence Music (CFM) has canceled tonight’s (Nov. 16) scheduled performance by Honeysuckle and Four Bridges at Hope & Main in Warren.

“CFM’s health has been severely tested this year with the challenges of being on tour in Newport County,” CFM Artistic Director Erin Young stated in an e-mail sent out this morning. “The opportunity to get acquainted with new venues has presented opportunities, though is requiring additional resources and creative approaches.”

CFM’s home base is the Common Fence Point Community Center, but has been forced to take its shows on the road this season due to a major renovation project to transform the building into a community-wide arts center.

Besides Hope & Main, the series has also scheduled shows at St. John’s Masonic Lodge in Portsmouth, The Casino Theater and Fenner Hall in Newport. Next month, Portsmouth High School will be the site of CFM’s annual Christmas show, featuring The Sweetback Sisters.

CFM leadership is mindful of keeping the organization in financial health until the shows are back at the Common Fence Point hall, Ms. Young stated, and is approaching that responsibility from multiple angles:

• CFM’s 2018 Annual Drive (make a donation at www.CommonFenceMusic.org)

• board development and local visibility

• revising the season schedule

“The challenging decision has been made to scale back the season schedule at this juncture to retain the character and integrity of the series. This has not been arrived at lightly but better positions the organization to keep its series for future seasons,” Ms. Young said.

“We are dedicated to making this a positive year of increased visibility for CFM and growing excitement around returning home to the remodeled CFP Hall in fall 2019. We will continue to send out press releases regarding program changes if they occur,” she said.
