Hampden Meadows School library media specialist Melanie Roy received a Golden Apple Award during a surprise celebration on Thursday morning, Feb. 15.

Ms. Roy was working with students from Ms. Zimmerman's class when a large group of people, including RI Department of Education Commissioner Dr. Ken Wagner and a camera crew from Channel 10, entered the Hampden Meadows School library.

Channel 10 reporter Ashley Cullinane shared the good news with Ms. Roy, who received one round of applause after another. Fellow HMS teacher Sandy Ginalski nominated Ms. Roy for the award. Ms. Ginalski said she is so impressed by Ms. Roy's enthusiasm and energy for teaching and sharing the joy of reading with students.

"She's the type of person who deserves an award," said Ms. Ginalski.

In fact, Ms. Roy has actually been nominated for a Golden Apple Award numerous times. Hampden Meadows School math specialist Alison Burrows said she nominated Ms. Roy last year and initially thought it was her nomination that led to Thursday's award.

Ms. Roy said she was completely surprised by the award. When she spotted Dr. Wagner entering the HMS library, her first thought was to approach him and share some of her ideas about improving student literacy statewide. She said imparting a love of reading with young people is incredibly important.

"That's what it's all about," Ms. Roy said.

Ms. Roy has worked at Hampden Meadows School for the past 15 years. She spent her first 10 years as a fourth grade teacher and the last five as the library media specialist. She said she loves her job.

"I think I'm the luckiest person in the building," she said.

Hampden Meadows School Principal Tracey McGee was very excited to see Ms. Roy earn the award. She said Ms. Roy does a great job working with students and teachers at the elementary school.

"She is so inspirational," she added.

Students at Hampden Meadows School said Ms. Roy definitely deserves the recognition.

"She's a really good library teacher," said Nate Gravelle.

Channel 10 will air the segment featuring Ms. Roy on March 8.
