The Barrington High School girls volleyball team improved to 4-1 after defeating Cranston East 3-1 on Friday night, Sept. 21.

The highlight of the victory came as Barrington High School senior Maile Somera recorded her 1,000th career kill.

"This is quite a significant milestone, and rare, at least in the state of Rhode Island," said Barrington High School coach Ron Enos.

Coach Enos said reaching the 1,000 career kills mark is even more rare than the 1,000-point mark in basketball. He added that her efficiency is also quite impressive at .359 percent.

"Maile's offensive skills are matched only by her own defensive skills," said Coach Enos. "To go along with all those kills she has amassed 657 career digs. Her ball control is remarkable, she is seldom aced or passes a ball out of system. In addition, Maile has exceptional communication skills which she's developed through her experience in the sport."

Maile's standout play has garnered plenty of attention over the past few years. She was also recently named the Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year in girls volleyball for the second straight year.

She has played a key role in her teams' successes in recent years, leading the Eagles to a state championship two years ago and the state semifinals last year.

In Friday night's 20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 win over Cranston East, Somera finished with 27 kills and 10 digs.

"Maile is a once in a lifetime kind of player that you hope to have the opportunity to coach some day," said Coach Enos. "We're very lucky to have had her in our program these past four years, she's been a huge part of our success. She has certainly set the bar high for future players to aspire to."

Those close to the Barrington High School girls volleyball program also credit Somera with being a caring teammate and an inspiration to younger players. She is also an honor student.
