Adam Kelly and his sister Annika celebrate successful indoor weight throwing seasons

Posted

Barrington's Adam Kelly, a senior at Princeton University, finished second in the weight throw at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend.

Not to be outdone, Adam's sister Annika, a senior at Barrington High School, finished second in the weight throw at the 2019 New Balance Nationals Indoor Championship last weekend.

The two Kelly siblings earned All-American status — one in college and the other in high school — for their impressive performances.

At the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala., Adam had a top throw of 23.38 meters on his last attempt. That throw broke the Princeton University and Ivy League record in the weight throw. (The previous record belonged to Cornell's Rudy Winkler.)

Adam was also named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Mid-Atlantic Regional Field Athlete of the Year and Ivy Heps Most Outstanding Male Field Performer as Princeton won its fifth straight indoor Heps crown.

Annika, who finished second at the RIIL Indoor Track and Field State Championships last month, traveled to the New Balance Armony in New York, NY over the weekend and finished second in the nation in the weight throw.

Annika had a top throw of 17.70 meters, which out-distanced the best throw by fellow Rhode Islander Cheyenne Figueroa of 17.66 meters. Monique Hardy, of Webster, NY, won the event with a distance of 19.69 meters.

Annika was crowned All-American in the weight throw for her second place finish.

Other locals

Adam and Annika Kelly were not the only Barrington residents competing at the college and high school track nationals last weekend.

Bobby Colantonio, a former teammate of Adam's at Barrington High School, continued his impressive return after beating cancer. The freshman at the University of Alabama entered the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships seeded 16th in the weight throw but climbed six places to finish 10th. Colantonio had a top throw of 21.01 meters.

A national champion weight thrower in high school, Colantonio accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Alabama in 2016, but was diagnosed with cancer before he began his college throwing career. Colantonio battled back and defeated cancer, and this year returned to competitive track and field. This season he became the number one ranked freshman weight thrower in college track and field and was the only freshman to qualify for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track Championship.

At the 2019 New Balance Nationals Indoor Championship for high school student-athletes, Sydney Polando finished 25th in the girls weight throw. Sydney, a senior at Barrington High School, had a top throw of 14.24 meters.

Also at the 2019 New Balance Nationals Indoor Championship, Barrington High School junior William Cauley finished 31st in the boys weight throw event with a top distance of 18.42 meters.
