Sunday morning traffic stop leads to arrest

Barrington police charged Joseph P. Higgins, 21, of Warwick, with DUI of liquor or drugs-first offense, between .10-.15.

Police said the vehicle Mr. Higgins was driving ran a red light and nearly struck another vehicle at about 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 24.

Police caught up with the vehicle Mr. Higgins was driving and ordered it over to the side of the road. Upon approaching the driver, officers could allegedly smell the odor of alcohol.

Police said Mr. Higgins did not know where he was, and that he said he was going to his girlfriend's house in Tiverton. Mr. Higgins allegedly admitted to consuming "a couple drinks" earlier that day.

Police said Mr. Higgins took a breathalyzer test, which registered a .135 and .130 — both exceed the legal limit for blood alcohol content. Police also allegedly found a small amount of marijuana inside Mr. Higgins's vehicle.
