RI Reds Heritage Society will honor Nicholas Bernardo

Posted

The Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society will be honoring six "Unsung Hockey Heroes" from the Rhode Island Interscholastic League at the Society's 18th annual reunion at Goddard State Park in Warwick on Sunday, Aug. 5. Among the six Unsung Hockey Heroes is Barrington High School's Nicholas Bernardo.

Nicholas has been selected as this year’s Gil Mayer Award winner. The award is named after one of the Reds’ all-time great goaltenders and this year presented for outstanding defensive play.

Unsung Heroes are high school hockey players who contribute to their teams in ways that only their coaches and other players are aware of. Often they exemplify the term “student athlete” but there is usually more than that.

"Often they have overcome personal hurdles and have inspired their teammates to push through their struggles. Sometimes they are natural (or conditioned) leaders on and off the ice," stated a press release from the Society. "Many are civic-minded and go above and beyond to serve their community and still maintain their focus on academics and hockey. The stories are as varied as the athletes."

Three awards are given to male and female hockey players in memory of three former Rhode Island Reds standout players.

Nick, a senior, was converted from forward to defenseman at the beginning of his junior year. His coach, Kevin Croke, said that Nick is “a fearless defender, who often rivals our goalies in the number of shots blocked in a game.” Offensively he led the Eagles' defense in scoring.

Nick was a quiet leader who set the example for seniors and freshmen alike.

The annual reunion event, which starts at noon, will feature the Society’s annual awards’ presentations, a buffet dinner, music, raffles, and a silent auction of hockey memorabilia. Tickets cost is $35 per adult, $15 for children.

For more information contact Mal Goldenberg at 401-782-6623 or mal@rmcri.com. Deadline for reservations is July 16. Tickets will not be sold at the gate.
