Babysitting will be provided at Barrington FTM

Financial town meeting is Wednesday, May 23

Town officials said babysitting will be provided for free at Wednesday's financial town meeting in Barrington.

The annual meeting where the town's budget is voted upon will be held at Barrington High School at 7 p.m.

Barrington Town Moderator Julia Califano wrote in an email that the babysitting service is a student-run, community service project.

"It would be wise for parents to call the high school ahead to tell them how many children they will be bringing," said Ms. Califano. (The phone number for the high school is 247-3150.)

Ms. Califano further specified that children 12 and older can attend the meeting, sitting in the visitor's (non-voting) section of the auditorium.

There will be overflow seating available in the school's cafeteria, "but we are hoping not to use it, as it eliminates the possibility of voice votes," said Ms. Califano.

This year's financial town meeting will offer taxpayers the opportunity to vote on the school department's operating budget, the municipal government's operating budget, the capital improvements budget, a proposed $6 million bond for road repaving and Peck Center building upgrades, and an amendment calling for a $500,000 cut to the school budget.

Budget details

Here are some of the numbers taxpayers will be asked to vote upon:

• $2,372,000: The total proposed budget increase, including municipal, schools, capital improvements and debt service. This is a 3.3 percent increase over the current budget.

• $242,000: Proposed increase to the municipal government operating budget.

• $200,000: Proposed increase to the capital improvement budget.

• $472,000: Proposed increase to the debt service.

• $1,459,000: Proposed increase to the school department operating budget.
